It's debatable to say that the U.S lost the war, however we do know that during the Vietnam War, many American soldiers lost their lives. Resulting in the American government to make changes. When Vietnamization was first brought in it created a domino effect, hoping to bring back some troops, and eventually having all soldiers pull out of Vietnam. The US had not benefit a lot when the war was over. Nearly 60,000 soldiers were killed during this time, and by the time the war was over had cost US nearly 150 billion dollars. Yet Vietnam was still taken over by the communist movement. Resulting in United States looking weak to other countries.

The Ostpolitik was an example of Detente. It was a basic treaty that started East and West Germany to slowly join as one. Another could be The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This implied that any country which had not had a nuclear weapon at this point in time was not allowed to start making them. Some countries (France, China) didn't want to sign the treaty, because they were nearly finished building theirs. The other two events were The Helsinki Accords and the Salt Talks. The Helsinki accords were able to relieve tension is Eastern Europe, unlike the Salt Talk. The Salt Treaty decided the limited number of ICBM's, but neither side listened to it. This brought arrowed the second SALT talk, which was interrupted by the Soviet.

When Ronald Reagan steeped into power he created the concept of "Reaganomics". Reagan believed that if they spent a lot of money then they could win the cold War. By saying America were building weapons like satellite in space that could shoot down nuclear missiles it forced the USSR to spend a lot of money trying to do this as well. America never actually build it, but they did get the USSR to spend a lot of money, which is what they wanted. Till Gorbachev came into power and, was the one who really brought the end to communism and the cold war. He supported Detente and freedom of speech and press. He apologized for past actions, which lead to other countries ending communism.
