The leader of China at this time was Sun Yat Sen, when Sen died Chiang Kai-Shek became the new leader. Chiang tried to get rid of the communists, but Mao Zedong was a propaganda leader toward communism, and when Mao ran away this led to the Long March. During the Long March, Mao continued trying to build his communist party. When Japan began to invade Manchuria in 1931, the Chinese Communist Party became stronger, even when Chiang was still trying to get rid of them. During the Chinese Civil War, the CCP and Mao were able to free parts of northern China from the Japanese. Chiang however eventually lost, sending him to Taiwan. During the great leap forward it wasn't Mao intention of killing 30 million people. Therefore not like leaders like Stalin, and Hitler. Mao didn't care that people died, he just wanted his projects to be finished. This event was also caused by a great famine. During the Great Leap Forward Mao ordered collective farms not only to double as steel producers, but also forced new unproven agricultural techniques. The result of these actions led to drastic drops in food production, leading to 30 million people dying. His vision for a stronger nation made him a leader, killing many people in the process.
